The Teacher

Bjørg Tynning (née Andersen)

b. 1945, Oslo

Bjørg started at Tveten in August 1966, aged 21, while her mother-in-law Åshild was still teaching there. She stayed at the same school for 49 years. Today Tone Tynning works at Tveten — three generations of Tynning women at the same school (Åshild 1937–1967, Bjørg 1966–2015, Tone today).

From Trondheimsveien to Drammen

Bjørg was born in 1945 in Oslo and grew up in Trondheimsveien, with parents who had both travelled far to end up there. Her father, Odd Sverre Andersen, came from Langesund in Bamble and was a carpenter at Bugge & Gjertsen, the furniture and interiors factory that later also set up operations in Drammen — where the family eventually moved. Her mother, Fredrikke, was born Briseid, from Feda in Kvinesdal, and through her the Tynning family gained yet another root: Sørlandet.

Fredrikke Briseid was born on 9 December 1916 in Feda, into a large group of siblings at the home of merchant and cooper Martin Briseid and his wife Hanna. In the 1920 census she appears as a three-year-old in the house at Feda together with her older siblings Thorleiv, Sofie, Edith and Simon Johan. The name was likely inherited from an older Fredrikke Briseid in the village, the farmer's wife at Lindland, born 1850. Fredrikke Andersen died in Drammen on 6 March 1990.

The Teacher at Tveten

Bjørg took her teacher training in Kristiansand, and then the road led to Eidanger. In August 1966 she started at Tveten primary school, aged 21, while her mother-in-law Åshild was still teaching there, and there she stayed: for 49 years (1966–2015), never at any other school. Generations of Eidanger children have learned to read and count with Bjørg Tynning, and her name yields close to two hundred hits in the National Library's newspaper archive. That it happened to be Tveten, the school where her mother-in-law had taught for thirty years, makes her the quiet link between the old and the new era at Søndre Valler. And the thread is not broken: today Tone Tynning, Torstein's daughter, works at the same school. Three generations of Tynning women at Tveten: Åshild, Bjørg and Tone.

Søndre Valler

In 1969 Bjørg married Åsmund Lasse Tynning, and they settled at Søndre Valler, where Åsmund ran the farm. There Åse Linda was born in 1970 and Øystein Lasse in 1972, and there she has since experienced the grandchildren Lasse (2014) and Amund (2018) running across the same farmyard. Three geographies meet in her children: Sogn through the Tynning family, Telemark through Valler, and Sørlandet and Oslo through Bjørg herself.
