Four Hundred Years of the Name Lasse

Dad is Åsmund Lasse, his son is Øystein Lasse, and his son again is simply Lasse. Where does the name come from, and why has the family held on to it so firmly? A short bonus episode about a big name – from a Roman martyr and thirteen men named Lasse in Brekke, to old Lasse and little Lasse under the same roof at Tynning in 1910.

A Thousand Years Beneath Haugland Farm

Seven sisters at Øvre Haugland, around 1921.

Episode 4 · 6 September 2026 · 47 min

A Thousand Years Beneath Haugland Farm

The fourth episode of the family archive's audio series, in English. We turn to the farm Åshild came from, Øvre Haugland in Brekke by the Risnefjord, and to a farm name that comes from burial mounds that no longer exist. Oluf Rygh explained the name in 1919, and Nicolay Nicolaysen described in 1862 how the last mound had been excavated only three years earlier. From there the story runs on through a medieval chapel that vanishes from the sources around 1340, the school that stood in the farmyard, Hans Haugland who subscribed to Søren Jaabæk's radical Folketidende while his neighbours took Almuevennen, a flock of children whose exact number the sources disagree about, Åshild at the teachers' college on Stord, and her brother Odd among the communists at Herøya. Two voices, Ingrid and Magnus.

Six Radical Political Directions in One Family

The fifth episode in the family archive's audio series, and the first one about politics alone. A farmer in Brekke who in the 1870s subscribed to Søren Jaabæk's radical paper Folketidende while most of his neighbours took the rival farmers' paper Almuevennen. An electoral college list from 1891 where Hans Torsteinson Haugland received one hundred and forty five of two hundred and thirty eight votes. A schoolmistress who was a Liberal. A farmer who served as deputy chairman of a farmers' protest movement during the crisis years. A construction worker who sat on the municipal council for the Norwegian Communist Party and chaired the Herøya workers' union through the conflict of 1948. A farmer from Valler who became a Conservative member of parliament for twenty years and chaired the party's programme committee ahead of the 1981 election victory. And his grandson, who sat in parliament for the Labour Party from 2013 to 2017, on the education committee, a hundred years after his great grandmother qualified as a teacher. Six political directions, five generations, one family. Two of them were brothers in law. Two of them were uncle and nephew. This is not an episode about who was right. It is about what it does to a family when people have held opinions, loudly, for a hundred and sixty years.
