The teacher of knowledge, responsibility and quiet humour

Lars Konrad Tynning

From Brekke to the teaching profession

Lars Konrad was born at Tynning on 25 July 1903 and baptised in Brekke on 16 August. The parish register thus settles an earlier conflict of dates: 25 July is correct, not 25 March.

He trained as a teacher at Stord teachers' college and graduated in 1928. After his training he first taught at the continuation school at home in Brekke, then at Kvamsøy in Vik in Sogn and in Forsand in Ryfylke. In 1931 he married Agnes Kringlen. They had the daughters Sigrid Jenny, Orlaug and Berly Inger.

Twenty-three years in the Gjerpen schools

In 1948 the family came to Gjerpen in Telemark. Lars first became a permanent teacher at Gravli school. From 1952 he worked at Nærum school in outer Gjerpen, and in the school year 1956–57 he served as acting head teacher; the post was later converted into a headship. In 1964 he moved to the new Menstad lower secondary school, and in 1967 he became head of Bølehøgda school, where he remained until his retirement in 1971. In all he gave 23 years as a teacher and school leader in Gjerpen.

How he was remembered

The obituary in Varden describes Lars as a highly able and conscientious teacher and administrator, a good colleague and a knowledgeable and inspiring teacher. It singles out his quiet humour. He was also civically minded. From 1960 to 1963 he sat on the Gjerpen school board and in the same period on the audit committee of the Gjerpen housing cooperative. The obituary stresses that he kept his party politics apart from the school.

Lars died on 7 December 1990, aged 87. His story is both a teacher's story and a story of moving: the training at Stord and the work in several small places in western Norway were followed by a long career in the growing Grenland region.
