A short life — preserved in few but clear traces

Sigrid Tornelle Tynning

1901–1923

Sigrid was given only 22 years. Parish registers, censuses and a single photograph from her youth still make it possible to give her a place of her own in the family history.

Growing up at Tynning

Sigrid Tornelle was born at Tynning on 27 February 1901 and baptised in Brekke on 5 March. She was the third child of Isak and Brita and grew up among the many siblings on the farm.

A photograph of young people on the quay in Brekke in 1918 is the clearest visual trace of her. The archive caption identifies Sigrid as the first from the left in the front row. Three years later the 1920 census records her at home at Tynning. The census has the wrong month in her date of birth, but name, family and residence make the identification certain.

The last traces in the sources

The 1922 municipal census of Bergen records Sigrid at Neevengården and notes that she had moved from Brekke. The source does not say why she was there, and we attach no explanation to the stay.

The parish clerk's register for Brekke shows that Sigrid died on 6 May 1923 and was buried on 12 May. She was 22. The cause of death is recorded as «tæring», the common older Norwegian word for tuberculosis. She was unmarried, and no record of children has been found.

What the source says — and does not say

The person record in the 1922 municipal census of Bergen lists Sigrid Tornelle Tynning at Neevengården, noting that she had moved from Brekke.

The source gives no background for the stay. We therefore reproduce only what it actually says and leave the rest open.

Sigrid's page should not be filled with assumptions. Its strength lies in what actually exists: her name in the parish register, the photograph from her youth, her place among the siblings and the short line of a life that led back home to Tynning. If the family has kept letters, photographs or spoken memories, her story may yet grow richer.
