The farm and the nursery

Tormod was born at Tynning on 14 April 1913. He grew up in the years when his father Isak was developing the farm into a nursery. Around 1939–40 Tormod took over the home farm and the business. Under his management fruit trees and berry plants were grown for sale, and the Tynning nursery was described as one of the larger ones in Sogn og Fjordane.

Family and the next generation

Tormod married Herborg Lovise Næss (1915–1967). They had the daughters Sollaug Ovida, Brita, Ingrid and Turid Liv. In 1971 Ingrid and her husband Einar Alfred Nystrand took over the farm and the nursery. In this way the knowledge Isak had built up was carried on through another generation.

The last mayor of Brekke

Tormod combined the running of the farm with wide public engagement. The Brekke municipal council elected him mayor at its constituting meeting on 29 December 1959. The newspaper Sogn og Fjordane reported the election on 4 January 1960. In his speech of thanks he said that he would do what he could for the people of Brekke, respect disagreement and represent the whole municipality — not just one village.

He became the last mayor of Brekke before the municipality became part of the new Gulen at the turn of the year 1963–64. He later served as deputy mayor of Gulen and held offices in the savings bank, the farmers' union and the Centre Party. The official election statistics for 1965 list him as a nursery owner and fifth candidate on the Centre Party's parliamentary list in Sogn og Fjordane. He was not elected, but the candidacy shows the breadth of his political engagement.
