Torstein and Anne Alette Haugland
1868 to 1956 and 1875 to 1933
Torstein Hansson Haugland was born at Øvre Haugland in Brekke on 25 February 1868 and received the deed to the farm on 25 October 1895. In 1896 he married Anne Alette Olsdatter Asheim from the neighbouring farm Asheim, born 28 July 1875. The parish history calls him a capable and industrious farmer. He sat on the municipal council, chaired the school board and was elected to the parish council in the autumn of 1933, the same year his wife died. Anne Alette died on 30 January 1933, fifty-seven years old. Torstein died suddenly of a stroke on 20 October 1956, eighty-eight years old.
They had thirteen children. Twelve grew up, and Åshild was the eldest.

Torstein H. Haugland died suddenly on Saturday 20 October 1956. The obituary appeared in Sogn folkeblad a few days later.
From the newspapers when he died
«On Saturday 20 October the farmer Torstein Haugland died suddenly of a stroke. He was born on 25 February 1868 and was thus approaching 89 years. With Torstein Haugland a fine man has gone to rest. Right from his youth he was fired by the many idealistic causes of the time. Youth association work and the cause of the Norwegian language were always close to his heart. And he was always keenly interested in history, both local history and the history of Norway. But he liked it best when he saw young people around him, and he was always in such good spirits that young people thrived in his company […] Such a man was Torstein Haugland. We bless his memory with peace.»
