Isak and Brita Tynning

Isak Lassesen Tynning was born at the Tynning farm in Brekke on 4 August 1875, the only son. On 27 March 1897 he married Brita Larsdatter Østerbø from the farm Østerbø in Lavik, born 6 May 1874, in Brekke church. That same year he took over the farm from his father, twenty-one years old, for 3,000 kroner plus a maintenance agreement. He ran it until 1940.

They had nine children between 1897 and 1916. Lasse, who later bought Søndre Valler in Eidanger, was the second of them.

Isak had almost no schooling. On his seventieth birthday in 1945 Sogns Avis wrote that he was «first and foremost a self-taught man», and that the only schooling he had was a five-month course with the member of parliament Lasse Trædal as his teacher. Even so he held public office from the age of twenty-six, and the paper reckoned he had held «most of the offices a rural municipality has to offer». He sat on the board of Brekke Savings Bank for twenty-eight years.

He cultivated between forty and fifty mål of land and dug several kilometres of ditches. And he built what remained after him: the Tynning nursery, which he started in a small way and expanded little by little, year by year. The family counts 1927 as its starting year. The nursery became known throughout Sogn, and Isak wrote about fruit growing in coastal districts.

When he turned seventy, Sogn og Fjordane wrote of him: «One of the foremost men in Brekke ... ran the ancestral farm with great skill, was also a capable horticulturist, and founded a well-known nursery.» Of his wife, Sogns Avis wrote that he «married Brita Østerbø in 1897, who has been a particularly good and strong wife to him».

Isak died in Brekke in September 1960, eighty-five years old. Brita died on 19 June 1965.
