The Communicator
Signe Prøis Tynning
b. 12 January 1963 · Porsgrunn
Signe Prøis Tynning is the middle of Torstein and Solveig Tynning's three daughters. She grew up between the farm at Søndre Valler in Eidanger and the parliamentary flats in Oslo, in a family where politics, sport, newspapers and civic engagement were a natural part of everyday life. Like her mother she did gymnastics and coached in her younger years, but it was as a journalist and communicator that she would become known across the country.
Daughter of Torstein and Solveig · Sister of Tone and Gro · Mother of Christian Tynning Bjørnø
Between the farm and Parliament
While Torstein Tynning sat in Parliament, the family moved several times between Porsgrunn and Oslo. Signe has told of the parliamentary flats, the orange cupboards in the children's room, figures from press and politics around the family, and barn parties for the press corps back home on the farm. Her upbringing gave her experience of widely different environments — and an early understanding that people are first and foremost people, whatever their background or position.

The parliamentary flats
A childhood lived close to Norwegian politics.
A home of engagement
Newspapers on the table, Dagsnytt on the radio and conversations about society.
As told by Signe in interviews.
From radio to live television
Signe began as a journalist at Radio 1 in 1985. In 1994 she moved to TV 2, first as a presenter in sport, then in the news and the health programme «På godt og vondt». From 2000 to 2015 she presented «God morgen Norge». Over fifteen years she became a familiar morning face, meeting people from every part of society — from prime ministers and cultural figures to experts and people with powerful everyday stories.
Roughly 2,000 live broadcasts
On her departure, TV 2 stated that Signe had hosted around 2,000 live broadcasts of «God morgen Norge».
Curiosity as a way of working
Signe has described herself as a journalistic 'potato': not a narrow specialist, but curious about people and able to move between widely different subjects. That suited «God morgen Norge», where a single broadcast could span politics, health, culture, animals and practical everyday life. Her hallmark was the down-to-earth conversation and her ability to make the guest feel met.
The author
After her TV years Signe wrote the biography of Nikita founder Inger Ellen Nicolaisen. The book follows the path from a difficult upbringing and life as a single mother to the building of a major hairdressing chain. Shortly after publication it entered third place on a bestseller list for general non-fiction.
A new start in Porsgrunn
After TV 2, Signe moved home to Porsgrunn and began volunteering for Kirkens Bymisjon. She contributed with media contacts, the national TV fundraiser and local network work, before being employed at the new city mission centre. There she helped develop a social café, a second-hand shop, work training and activities intended to give people a place to belong.
The Kirkens Bymisjon motto 'No one is only what you see' gathers much of the common thread in Signe's story: the interest in the person behind the role, the façade or the headline.
Civic engagement at home
The homecoming to Porsgrunn also led to local and voluntary engagement. Signe stood on the Labour Party's list at the 2019 local election and is documented as a representative in Porsgrunn city council in the following period. She has been connected to the council for senior citizens, inclusion work, Kirkens Bymisjon and the Norwegian Society for Sea Rescue's project 'Ta roret, jenter!' ('Take the helm, girls!'). In 2019 she was also producer of the opening week of the new Østre Porsgrunn church.
